It’s a lot of work to get just the right photo, caption, and filter in front of the right audience at the right time.
And to complicate things (for us “drive traffic” digital marketers), Instagram doesn’t even let us include live links within the post text.
So instead, we have to be creative and strategic, and utilize a few Instagram-specific tricks of the trade to get our message out.
Here’s my list of six tried-and-true tips you can use to help make a social splash on Instagram:
Use the “Right” Hashtags
Use a hashtag search app, like Hashtagify.me , and use keywords to search for industry-specific hashtags. You can also check out Tagsforlike.com for long hashtag lists – just copy and paste! I like saving common hashtag lists on my mobile device under the Notes app so I can easily apply to my Instagram posts. Want in on another Instagram secret? Include your post hashtags in the comments (not post text) and watch the engagement increase!
Engage with Key Influencers
Every demographic and industry has key “influencers” – popular, celeb-like personalities with high social following and wide media reach. Engaging on these influencers’ accounts – likes, comments, reposting – can help increase brand awareness among your target market. Use Hashtagify.me > Top Influencers to identify top influencers for your market niche.
(Easily!) Create Quote Graphics
While there’s lots of Instagram-specific graphic apps, Easel is one of my all-time favs. Download the free app, search templates, add an inspiration quote, brand with your logo and PRESTO – you’ve got a fab post. While we’ve all seen that account that’s entire feed is pump-you-up posts, an occasional (I strive for once a week) inspire graphic can be a great way to connect with your followers.
Batch Your Posts
Posting once a twice a month of Instagram isn’t going to yield the same impact as daily awesomeness being added to your feed. But, if you had to generate these posts every day, you’d spend all your time on social (not good). Every two weeks, I sit down, create, and schedule social media posts for all my managed accounts. “Batching” posts like this is a great way to manage social media effectively without your virtual presence taking over your life.
Drive Traffic from Other Platforms
Instagram allows sharing of graphics to other platforms, such as Facebook or Twitter with each post. There’s two key advantages to utilizing this options: 1) It saves time, 2) lets your Facebook and Twitter followers know you’re rocking it out on Instagram = more followers! Leverage your already established following on other platforms to quickly grow your Instagram audience.
Geotag When Relevant
Using GPS technology, many of today’s social platforms allow functions for geotagging – or revealing your location along with the post. This can be a great way to increase your posts’ exposure. To geotag an Instagram post, select the option that says “Add to Photo Map”, and your image will be saved to the photo map with location of where the photo was clicked. Cool huh?
Safety side note: when geotagging on a personal account, implement safe practices for revealing your location. While there’s lots of info out there on geotagging, I’m a big fan of Digital Trends’ recommendation.
